Starting with the cooling of foods to the air conditioning of residences and offices, the field of application are wide-ranging. In the process, the following applies: Good insulation saves energy. Without insulation there is a risk of increased energy consumption as well as the formation of condensation.

The prevention of condensation is the most important task of insulation in "Refrigeration and air conditioning technology". FEF and PEF foams fulfil this role in the best possible way.

Insulating against condensation

What promises to be refreshing outside in the garden can be a problem indoors. Condensation can cause extensive damage with consequences extending far beyond financial losses. If the temperature of a medium, for instance a refrigerant pipe, is below the temperature of the environment, the environmental air cools down. If it drops below the dew point, the water vapour in the air condenses and condensation is the result. Refrigeration insulation is always necessary if the operating temperature of a medium is less than room temperature.

Correctly measuring refrigeration insulation thickness

The primary task of the insulation is to prevent the temperature from falling below the dew point and to block the flow of heat to the medium. Seams and connection points must be carefully sealed in order to ensure that the penetration of moisture is eliminated over the long term. In addition to clean workmanship, the correct insulation thickness is crucial. The following applies: The less heat it conducts, the more efficient and thinner the insulation is.

Solar systems are gaining increasing importance as an alternative energy source - especially in Europe. The most solar power systems worldwide are produced here. In order to ensure that they provide continuously high yields, they should be protected from energy losses. Special pipe insulation has proven to be up to the elevated demands of solar applications.

Weatherproof, UV-resistant and heat-resistant up to 150° C - high temperature EPDM foams provide reliable insulation in solar applications. Thanks to their flexibility, they also insulate lines which are difficult to access and assure constant solar yields.

Demands on solar thermal insulation

Insulation must be even more optimised for solar thermal applications than anywhere else. Since the pipelines are partially exposed to the open air, they are subjected to various weather influences. If the insulation becomes soaked, its conductivity also increases, wherein its thermal performance capacity is reduced. Since moisture can form on its exterior, an additional covering in the outside area alone is often insufficient. Insulation based on synthetic rubber is non-hygroscopic, thanks to its closed-cell structure. It maintains a thermal conductivity equilibrium and retains its insulating capacity even under the influence of moisture.

Resistance against wind and weather

UV radiation, humidity, heat, and other climatic stress can cause a great deal of damage to insulation. Therefore, good weather resistance is extremely important. This can be tested with accelerated artificial weathering of the insulating material. However, since laboratory tests cannot replicate all real influential factors - due to regional differences - additional endurance testing under extreme conditions is recommended.

The extreme temperatures and environments associated with industrial locations present a number of unique challenges and considerations for insulation materials.
